Brighton photography collective make their debut

Amanda Gordon, from the group, explains: “We are four Brighton-based artists that are all previous graduates from the University of Brighton (MA photography).” Nothing and Everything Happened will be the group’s debut outing. Joining Amanda are Zara Pears, Ola Teper and David West. Amanda said: “In search of the impact of the seemingly insignificant, works selected explore the fragility of trace by amplifying the imperceptible. Pryzma was born out of a desire to create a collaborative space where peer support and creative momentum could be maintained after completion of academic study. The show consists of photographs, collages, projections, moving image pieces and sculpture elements.” Amanda says her work “considers the abjectness and fragility of our bodies and in particular the current threat associated with our oral excretions and their potential to contaminate. “Zara Pears presents images from a new body of work titled ‘How does the body Speak?’ Images produced explore the cognitive processes of repression and recollection in relation to trauma. Works also play with performance and narrative to explore the body and it’s latent response to past events. “Building on the Freudian understanding of trauma, Ola Teper’s work explores the mechanisms of it through a photographic metaphor. As one of the treatments for trauma involves eye movement as a gateway to the unconscious, shifting from left to right is a reoccurring theme. These works were also created by working with an enlarger from the artist’s own past, placing personal memories and the role of the light projection as its case study. “Traditionally David West’s work has examined relationships between the natural world and the human body, bringing to light beings caught in time. Under the constraint of lockdown David continued to train his camera towards ready to hand objects including himself simultaneously becoming the sitter and maker of this work To Catch a Sunbeam.” The show is at The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Brighton & Hove, BN3 1EH, October 20-25; Tuesday 10:00 – 18:00; Wednesday 10:00 – 18:00; Thursday 10:00 – 18:00; Friday 10:00 – 18:00; Saturday 10:00 – 17:00; and Sunday 10:00 – 17:00.
